Large Gouda vase, signed by Johannes van Schaick, copper lustre c. 1930.
Large & Impressive Gouda vase, of ribbed form, painted with a ‘mirrored’ mottled pattern of red & blue flames on a pale ground. Signed in gold within the design ‘Johannes Schaick’. Base with extensive marks including ‘UNIQUE / PLAZUID’ painters mark JvS for Johannes Wilhelmus van Schaick. Circa 1930
30cm wide, 36cm high
The word 'Plazuid' was an abbreviated form of Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, and only used after 1928. Van Schaick was a designer with Gouda 1920-51, and was responsible for some amazing designs in the 1925 Arts Decoratifs display in Paris including lustre pieces. The mark dates this post- 1928, but the size and unusual full signature in the design itseld suggests it was an Exhibition piece.
