These Japanese terracotta vessels with low-relief mouldings and incised patterns were very popular in Victorian times and into the 20th century. With the opening up of Japan to Western trade in the 1870’s, the ‘Japanese’ taste demanded vases, umbrella stands, and other European useful & decorative shapes , which were sold in the quality shops of the time such as Liberty’s.
