Meissen cup & saucer, purple ground Schmetterling (butterfly) pattern pattern, c.1735
Sold
Meissen cup & saucer, flamboyantly painted with a version of the Schmetterling (‘butterfly’) pattern on a pale purple ground, the interiors with scattered indianische Blumen ‘Indian Flowers’ and butterflies, the unusual footrim ridge containing an intensely decorated ‘woven’ pattern in iron red & gold around a central flowerhead.
Impressed 2 to cup, 23 to saucer, underglaze crossed swords to both.
Circa 1735
Saucer 13cm, cup 9cm wide
Condition:
Some minor wear, the cup footrim adapted to fit the unusual raised saucer ring.
References: see Wark Collection #234 for a coffee pot in the same colour, with similar butterflies & flowers, circa 1735. The adaptation of the cup to suit the saucer suggests that while from the same service, the two pieces may have had different purposes originally. A raised ring is often seen in tureen stands, although usually in a larger size.
