The long strand of inclusions, known as rutiles, are titanium oxide structures, which only survive when they are encased in quartz like this.
The Greeks called rutilated quartz ‘hair of Aphrodite’, while the Roman’s referred to it as ‘hair of Venus’. This linked it to love and romance, with the name ‘Cupid’s Dart’ reflecting the classical myths. ‘Angel Hair’ quartz is a popular modern name, and in medieval times was a divine explanation for a natural curiosity often found in quartz when looking for gold or copper.
