the cup with a front oval panel painted by Bouchet with a seated girl in yellow dress & hat smelling a rose, set in a double border of gold, ruby-red and pearl trompe-l’oeil necklaces, tied behind the handle with a blue silk bow, the sides with similar borders with green beads, framing a yellow dianthus flower sprig to one side, a pink to the other.

Incised workman’s marks, saucer incised ’36’ , cup ’48a’,

dated 1781.

saucer 12cm wide, can 6.2cm high

Superb condition with very minor wear to gold, saucer has a very small bruise to rim and shows slight touch-ups to gild surrounding.

Note: the cup and saucer are both 1781, dated with the same ‘DD’ in a distinct cursive script, the hand-writing of Jean Bouchet; there is also his distinct mark, a tree symbol. While they are very attractive displayed together, they were originally not part of the same set.

Jean Bouchet is the artist who used the ‘tree’ as his symbol, active at Sèvres 1763-93 as a painter of human figures, landscapes, and flowers. He is very well represented in major collections, with his small landscapes being very appealing to original customers and present-day connoisseurs alike.

The cup has another painter’s mark also – ‘IN’, the mark of Jean Chauvaux jeune, a gilder active 1765-1802.

The workman’s marks 36 & 48a are both recorded by Saville in the Wallace Collection’s catalogue, vol III pp1130&1133. ’36’ is recorded 1770-90’s, while ’48a’ is recorded 1777-92.

In the Royal Collection, both ’36’ and ’48a’ are present, with the following pieces:

36
#177 – 2 bowls
#178 – bottle cooler
#245 – saucer
#270 – broth basin

48a
#130 – bottle cooler
#167 – bottle cooler
#221 – cup
#222 – saucer

of note, 221 & 222 are part of a set of similar goblets en litron, painted in a very similar manner by different artists, dated 1780.
