Unusual continental jug, pewter with plated finish 19th C

$325.00 AUD

Sizable jug, of cast globular form with beak spout & tight fitting hinged lid, the base a spun disk, the thumbpiece modelled as a classical anthemion.

Unusual bright plated surface,

Circa 1850

22cm high,
23cm handle to spout

Condition: some losses to plating, several solder repairs; the body seems to be of an unusual alloy, a ‘pewter’ with more tin than lead. the surface doesn’t appear to be silver plating, but some other alloy that remains bright. The presence of soldered repairs shows it is able to withstand the heat of solder, something standard pewter is not able to cope with without melting. The plating covers some construction & joint welding, with further solder being done over the top of that at a later date. Stylistically, it is earlier 19th century and may represent an experimental plating technique that was not widespread.
