Large Victorian hanging plaque, the thin round glass panel with reverse-printed & hand painted depiction of one of Raphael’s chreubs from the ‘Sistine Madonna’ (1512), within a wide black border, therim in gilt metal.
Trade label to back ‘DALTON /CAPE TOWN’

Good condition, some short scratches to front evident on close examination, small mark to black uper left; displays extremely well.

The technique of these Victorian plaques was to print the outlines onto glass, then paint the same side with colour paints – and the black border – which once framed, gave an impressive result.
Dalton & Reid was a store located at 113 Long Street, Capetown, in a 1902 directory.
