Vienna Coffee cup and saucer with naive monochrome scenes, c.1823
Vienna Coffee cup and saucer, decorated with naive monochrome scenes of figures in landscapes with buildings & trees, within curious jagged black borders, the cup with a double twist branch handle.
Blue underglaze shield mark,
also impressed numbers including ‘823’ for 1823,
the decoration slightly later.
Condition: minor wear to decoration
saucer 13.5cm, cup stands 7cm high
This piece is ‘outside decorated’, utilising a factory-decorated piece with a blue line midway – which has been disguised with the unusual black & gold border.
There is also a trace of a design underneath the painting, and some small flower sprigs have been removed to re-decorate in this unusual pattern.
