Indian Bronze Dohkra toy horse on wheels, 19th/ earlier 20th century
Sold
Indian Bronze Dohkra toy horse on wheels, the finely detailed hollow cast body made up from continuous coils in bronze, giving it a ‘striped’ affect; with well defined bridle & saddle mounted with bells, standing on a rectangular slab plinth with four spoked solid cast wheels on iron axis.
19th century or earlier
17.5cm high
Condition: good display condition; there is a break to one back leg with small section of plinth associated, repaired a long time ago with bronze strap & rivets, the repair itself now worn out; still structurally sound & displays well.
Provenance: an old Sydney, Australia, collection.
While we call these ‘toys’, and some made their way to the West as exactly that, they probably were intended as religious items rather than children’s playthings.
