Large Chalkware ‘Staffordshire’ style spaniel with gold chain and collar, c.1880

Condition: wear to paintwork, small chips along base, good for display.
These ‘Chalkwares’ are cast in plaster, the mould being an original Staffordshire Pottery version from England.
The Staffordshire was the cheaper product to begin with – the chalkwares were cheaper again! They were popular in the US & Australia, most probably as prizes at fairgrounds and inexpensive presents. As they are made from fragile materials, they are not common.
