Rare Georgian ‘Wine Waggon’ for twin decanters, Old Sheffield Plate c.1820

Rare George III ‘Wine Waggon’, in Old Sheffield Plate, the twin coasters joined & supported on axles with superbly constructed 6-spoke wheels, with leather tyres, a pivot point between allowing the front wheels to turn & steer, propelled via a forward protruding handle with turned ivory handle.

by Battie, Howard & Hawksworth, Sheffield,

Circa 1820.

49cm end-to-end; each coaster internal 12cm, wheelbase 17.5cm, coasters 20cm at rim and 6cm high.

Some signs of age to joints, silver finish is excellent and shows very little wear – and definitely original, not re-plated. All seams to the OSP are visible. Leather to wheels probably replaced, Ivory handle original. Wood in good condition, the felt beneath replaced.

References: see Bradbury (1912) p258 for the identical type, by Battie, Howard & Hawksworth, circa 1820.
