Unmarked,
possibly Lloyd Shelton,
circa 1835
15cm high, base 12cm wide
Condition: restoration to arm holding bird, bird is original; overpainting to ankles possibly disguising firing flaws; in good display condition.
ref. Rice “English Porcelain Animals” p56 pl. 14 for an identical example, along with pair (girl with goat) – ‘Staffordshire’ attribution only, c. 1835-40.
Lloyd Shelton is a possible maker, with the colourful moss including flowers being a common feature, although usually in small clumps; the gilt details also link, and the clay ‘wool’ is also similar. Overall, the quality of the piece compares very well, and if not by Lloyd, it is by one of the other higher-end Staffordshire companies.
