Wedgwood smearglaze teapot, wheat sheaf knop & basketweave, c. 1820
$495.00 AUD
Wedgwood smearglaze teapot in a pale yellow, the low compressed globular form with basket weave moulding, the lid with similar around a sheaf of wheat knop, the handle & spout with acanthus moulding.
Impressed ‘WEDGWOOD’,
circa 1820
Condition: displays well, underneath there is some evidence of staining to the body, no restoration.
The shape is included in the 1817 Catalogue (compiled 1815 + 16) still in the Wedgwood archives; however, it is among the handful of un-numbered plates included at a later date. Robin Reilly illustrates the page in Vol. II of ‘WEDGWOOD’, p549 and suggests the date of these plates is circa 1835, although these teapots were in production earlier, so the extra plates are documenting items that have already been in production, not ‘new’ products.
