An Asian-themed Fresh Stock

Welcome to our first ‘Fresh Stock’ for 2025.

Chinese bronze censors, Ming Dynasty, 16th-17th Century

We have a lot of splendid items to prepare for you, and will be releasing them over the next few weeks in groups of similar items – let’s call them ‘mini-Exhibitions’.

Starting with….. Asian.

Chinese, Japanese, Burmese, Sri Lankan…. there’s a great variety of cultures represented here.

Burmese Opium Weights
Burmese ‘Opium’ Weights

Burmese ‘Opium’ Weights

Thee miniature masterpieces are collectively known as ‘opium’ weights, as that was a common use for them in their countries of origin in South-East Asia – but they were used as the measuring weight for any other spice or item that needed weighing. The most commonly seen is a very cute crested duck – represented in this group by the rarely seen minute example, just ##mm tall…. The majority of these examples are a mythical ‘Lion’ creature, with four legs like a horse, a head that almost has a beak, and a wild main and tail – each also featuring a broad beaded necklace. Rarest in this group is a tiny creature we have called a ‘dog’ – but it may well be something else.

From local collections….

A fine selection of interesting Chinese & Japanese items come from several local collections. One in particular is significant, as it was accumulated in England in the 1960’s before the (now elderly) owner migrated to Australia. This provenance helps us be certain of the authenticity of the items; the copies in the mid-20th century were not as refined as those that are flooding the market today, and therefore more obvious. The downside is there are a lot of damaged, but genuine pieces…. but these are in themselves excellent inexpensive ‘Reference Study Pieces’.

Elephants!

These flamboyant beasts are from Sri Lanka, in particular the city of Kandy.

They represent the annual ceremony known as the Esala Perahera, which is one of the most vibrant and sacred festivals in the country. Celebrated for centuries annually in July or August, this grand procession is dedicated to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, housed in the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa).

The event blends spirituality and culture, with the stars being a mesmerizing parade of elaborately adorned elephants, traditional Kandyan dancers, fire dancers, drummers, and flag bearers. The air is filled with the rhythmic beats of drums and the glow of flickering torches as the procession winds through the city streets at night. At its heart, the largest and most elaborately decorated of the elephants has the honour of carrying the revered golden casket housed in a pagoda on its back, which has inside the Buddha’s Tooth Relic. These silver-clad jewel embossed beauties are a small reminder of an unforgettable experience.

More Elephants!

…. and still more Elephants!

Merry Christmas! – the Last Fresh Stock for 2023

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas….

… and this is our last ‘Fresh Stock’ for 2023. It’s been quite a year, with an amazing number of items being added to moorabool.com, and many finding new homes in collections all around the world.

Thank-You very much!

Late in 2023, we recieved the amazing collection of a local good customer to sell. He recalls his first purchase from a young John Rosenberg in 1964; since then, he has been a regular customer ‘through the decades’, and having never sold anything, has compiled quite a large collection!

Close-up of the amusing knop on the Rogers ‘Zebra Pattern’ supper dish below: a bemused lion!

Today you will see a selection of his blue & white on offer, and some delightful Creamwares. These were the smaller aspects of his collection; most of it is highly decorative English ceramics from the first half of the 19th century, including Worcester, Derby, Minton, Swansea, Davenport, Spode…. basically an Illustrated Encyclopaedia of British Ceramics!

Fresh to Stock: a Willow Pattern Christmas Tree!

So far we have catalogued 300 pieces: there is on estimation five times that to go, so that is quite probably approaching 2,000 pieces! Naturally to do our comprehensive identification and descriptive cataloguing we are known for takes time per piece…. so it will be a gradual release throughout 2024, in groups of similar items, periods, makers etc. Keep an eye out for our upcoming ‘Curated Collections’.

Moorabool would like to wish all our valued browsers the absolute best for this Christmas, and a Healthy & Happy New Year.
2024 will be the most exciting one in memory for Moorabool!

17th & 18th century ‘Genre’ scenes

The concept of ‘Genre’ – everyday scenes – became an artistic trend in the 17th century, and has remained ever since. Moorabool has a fascinating group of Oil & Watercolour artworks of landscapes – mostly Dutch – populated by people going about their everyday lives. They become fascinating windows into the past.

The Grand Tour

Taking the Grand Tour was the essential event in a Gentlemans – an Ladies – life. It ensured adventure and cultural credentials once back at home in England – and of course, a souvenir or two to show off with was essential! While ancient artefacts were brought back, many seem to have grought back replicas – probably oblivious that the Ancient Greek pot they had bought from the tomboralli was still warm from the kiln….

A large number of artists also went on a Grand Tour, to study and copy the Ancient Greek & Roman remains.

The Grand Tour selection at Moorabool covers all these origins – alongside a stock of original Ancient Art & Artefacts.

WIlliam Oliver - Hadrian's Villa, signed & dated 1849. Note the self-portrait of the artist sketching in the foreground.

Romantic Landscapes

‘Romantic’ Landscape art is based on the exploration of the wilderness, the rugged far-flung parts of Britain & the Continent that were often hard to access, but rewarded with spectacular ‘Picturesque’ sights. This was a late 18th century movement, and was embraced by a large number of artists in Britain.

James Poole (1804-1886) Stone House, circa 1870 -large work.
A small oil on board depicting a rough house in an Australian bush scene was sold at Aingers, Melbourne, in 2020, suggesting this artist visited Australia. It was dated 1880, 6 years before he died. No other records indicate an Australian visit.

A Potential Major literary discovery:

Is this an early depiction of the Bronte Sisters?
